Vortex Parent/Teen Orientations
For Gr. 6 - 12 and Adults Date: 10/12/2011; 10/27/2011 Time: 6:00 – 8:00 PM Location: The Vortex Description: The library is holding orientation evenings for parents and teens. Orientation is designed to introduce parents and teens to the services and responsibilities of using the Vortex area. Students wishing to utilize the Vortex teen area must attend an orientation time with at least one parent and/or guardian. Sessions begin every half hour and take place in the Vortex. Students who do not attend orientation will have access to Vortex materials, but will not be able to utilize the space for other activities. Orientations are drop-in.

One-on-one orientations may be scheduled with advance notification. Please contact Vortex Staff at 630-685-4199.
Art for Thought
For Gr. 4 – 8 Date: 10/13/2011 Time: 4:00 – 4:45 PM Location: Creativity Park Description: Who says history has to be boring?! Come learn about famous artists in history and various art styles throughout history. The program will start with a look at a famous artist in time or examining a particular style or medium. Then, we will work on a project based on what we learned!
Free Teen Movie Friday

A Beastly Event
For ages 13 – 18
Date: 10/15/2011 Time: 1:00 – 3:00 PM Location: The Vortex Description: Teens will enjoy snacks, activities, and watch the feature film Beastly starring Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer! Beastly, based on the book by Alex Flinn, is a modern-day take on the "Beauty and the Beast."

Teen Gaming Club

Date: 10/18/2011 Time: 6:30 - 8:00 PM Location: The Vortex Description: Interested in gaming? Try the library's gaming club where we'll play video & board games. The library will provide access to Wii, xBox 360, and PS3 video game equipment. Club members are welcome to bring in their own games, Rated T and below.
Zombie Prom
For Gr. 6 – 12
Date: 10/19/2011 Time: 6:00 - 8:00 PM Location: The Vortex Description: Join us for an evening of gore and fun. Costumes are highly encouraged. We'll have a contest for the best zombie and will crown a zombie king and queen. There'll be games, snacks, prizes and more...all zombie themed of course!
Tales from the Darkside: A Teen Author Event
For Gr. 6 – 12 Date: 10/22/2011 Time: 1:00 - 3:00 PM Location: The Vortex Description: Join paranormal authors Karly Kirkpatrick, G. P. Ching, and Megg Jensen of Darkside Publishing to discuss what they do best! And we have a unique opportunity to win a chance to have lunch with them. Submit a short scary story of your own to the Teen Services Desk September 1 -31st. The authors will pick winners to join them for lunch before the event. Winners will be announced by October 10th. Books will be available for sale.
Anime Club

Accepted: Getting Into Your First Choice School
For age 14 and up; Parents welcome.
Date: 10/26/2011 Time: 7:00 - 8:00 PM Location: Main Meeting Room (Meeting Room A) Description: This 1-hour workshop present by Kaplan is designed to show students and parents what college admissions officers expect from applicants' high school experiences. Topics covered include a variety of admission policies and the key factors used by admissions officers when making decisions.
