The Vortex, our library’s teen space, is intended for teens in grades 6 through 12. Other library patrons may browse the space when they require access to collections that are only available in the Vortex, but may not use this area for general reading, studying, or hanging out. The Vortex will not be open during all the hours that the library is open, but will be open at those times teens can be expected to be using the library. Staff at the second floor Media Desk will provide short-term access to the Vortex's collections any time that the library is open.

The Vortex, our library’s teen space, is intended for teens in grades 6 through 12. Teens are encouraged to use this space for general reading, studying or hanging out. If a teen wishes to utilize the other special features including the Teen Computer Lab, Open Video Game Play, Music “Egg” Chairs and the Teen Study Rooms, a Vortex Card IS required.

The card is free and is valid for 2 years. It does require an orientation with the teen and adult caregiver/guardian over age 18 present. The orientation takes about 15 minutes in which brief overviews of the room and behavior expectations are discussed. Adult and teen signatures are required acknowledging understanding. Teens will need to have their  picture taken to create their Vortex ID.

Teens and parents may attend a group orientation or schedule a one-on-one appointment with a Vortex staff member at the desk or by calling 630-685-4199. Drop-in orientations will be accommodated at the discretion of the staff. Please call us with any questions.

You may download the orientation packet. Teens and parents should read through the packet of information together and fill out the Vortex membership card form. A parent/guardian and teen must turn in the completed form to Vortex staff members at the group or scheduled orientation.

The orientation packet is now available in Spanish.  You may download the Spanish orientation packet here.  Spanish language orientations must be schedule in advance by calling 630-685-4199.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the library.
