Construction Update:
The shape of the library is becoming more defined since the basement has been completed, and the first floor foundation poured. The tripod shaped uprights that you see in the children's area are the shorings. These supports are temporary and are used to support the framework for the pouring of the second floor. To the north, you can see the area that will be circulation and "back of the house" work areas. In the center is the core, where the elevators serving all three floors and the basement will be. As you can see, the footprint of the new library takes up pretty much the entire area.
Did you know.......Because of the weight of the library materials on the shelving, library construction requires a weight limit of a minimum of 150 pounds per square foot. Construction of typical office buildings, or a building like a school, is 50 pounds per square foot. The concrete flooring used in the construction of the new library meets this requirement.
