About the Artist

Erika has a passion for art and education. She’s taught both elementary and middle school students and lead professional development workshops for teachers. As Lead Designer for EVOL Collective, she’s best known for her illustrations and often uses animals and nature within her art to create exciting festival wear, including enamel pins, screen-printed clothing, snapback hats, tapestries and bandanas. Her goal is to open a design studio for teens where they will learn the value of good design and collaborate with small businesses in their community to over design services. Through this effort, the teens would both develop their portfolios and give back to the community in a meaningful way.

Her creative approach to illustration starts with a team brainstorming session. Once an idea takes shape, she sketches a design on paper then digitizes it for use in Adobe Illustrator. From there, she works on the computer to create a black and white vector illustration. Once her design gets approved, she colors the design and delivers it for production.

About her Residency

April and May are busy months for designing merchandise for EVOL Collective. Erika will be in the middle of designing wear for both the Spring Awakening Music Festival (Chicago) and Electric Forest (Michigan). She will use the Studio 300 iMacs and Adobe software to support her illustration design work and plans to use the group collaboration rooms for concept meetings, sketching ideas and planning her design workload. Once completed, she will also be taking product photos of her latest designs.
