Oceans of Fun for Adults, Fountaindale Public Library

If you’ve visited us this month, you know our 2022 Summer Adventure theme is Oceans of Possibilities. We’re going all-in on the fun with many ocean-themed events for all ages. Here are some of the highlights for adults. This summer will be waves of fun, so be sure to join us!

Atlantic White Shark: Awareness Inspires Conservation (Zoom)
Thursday, June 16, 7 p.m.
Kristen Kibble of the Atlantic White Shark Conservatory covered a wide range of topics, from public perception of sharks to the role sharks play in our marine ecosystem. She’ll discuss the ongoing white shark research taking place off the coast of Cape Cod as well as how that research is connected to white shark conservation. Registration required.

Stay Out of the Water: Sea Monsters (Zoom)
Monday, June 20, 7 p.m.
What could be lurking just below the water? Dr. John Horgan will look at the imaginary and real sea creatures which have tormented humans throughout time. Registration required.

Beach Blanket Reads & Crafts
Thursdays, 7 p.m.
Summer is a great time to catch up on your reading! Come in and let us know what you’ve been reading. We’ll give you some suggestions on great new titles, and you can make a fun craft. Registration required.

Bottled Goodbyes (Zoom)
Thursday, July 7, 7 p.m.
Bottled messages bring tidings from ocean voyagers, invitations for pen pals, tragic attempts for rescue and floating farewells from long-lost souls. Join us as we discuss Ric Mixter’s new book, Bottled Goodbyes. Registration required.

Hollywood Goes to the Beach (Zoom)
Thursday, July 14, 7 p.m.
Join film historian Dr. Annette Bochenek as she explores classic Hollywood stars and their ties to beach films, the beach movie’s influence on fashion and iconic movie moments. Registration required.

Cooking Demo: Oceans of Possibilities 
Monday, July 18, 6:30 p.m.
Chef Maddox returns to the library featuring a demonstration of all things seafood and discusses paring the correct sauce or garnish to accompany cooked fish. Registration required.

The Tale of Sea Shanties (Zoom)
Wednesday, July 20, 7 p.m.
Join us as we take a look at the history and meaning of work songs sung at sea with Jessica M. Floyd, a scholar of sea shanties, during the Great Age of Sail. Registraion required.

Film Club: Jaws
Tuesday, July 26, 7 p.m.
Love talking about movies? This club is for you! Before we meet, watch the 1976 classic, Jaws, and then join us to critique and discuss the film in-depth. Drop in.

The History of The Beach Boys (Zoom)
Tuesday, August 9, 7 p.m.
If summer had a sound, it would be The Beach Boys–surf, sun and California. We will focus on their “sunniest” years from 1962 to 1967 using performance and interview clips. Registration required.
