Are you in a reading rut? Can’t find a book you like? Not feeling motivated to read? Well don’t worry, I’m here to help. Here are five bookish things you can do to get out of your rut and back into loving books.

1. Listen to an Audiobook

Sometimes all it takes to get out of your reading rut is to switch up your reading format! If you usually read books, try listening to them instead! The best thing about audiobooks is that you can listen while doing other things! I recently made a video offering Five Audiobooks to Read While on a Walk if you’re looking for a place to get started.

I listened to these audiobooks using the Libby app by OverDrive. You can download Libby to your smartphone or tablet to listen on the go. You can also download audiobooks from Axis 360 and hoopla. To learn more about these platforms, visit our digital collection.

2. Join a Book Club

If you need a little extra motivation to read, a book club might be the perfect fit for you. Book clubs are not only a great way to read new books, but also a way to meet new people too!

3. Get Personalized Picks

If your indecision about what to read next is holding you back, let me help! Sometimes all it takes is somebody introducing you to a new book to get back into the swing of things.

We have a new feature on our website that allows you to get personalized reading (and movie/TV) recommendations from our expert staff! Fill out the survey, and our staff will get back to you within three business days with a list of three to five personalized recommendations based on your reading interests!

4. Do a Bookish Craft

Sometimes all it takes to get out of a funk is to get your creative juices flowing! One of our newest databases, Creativebug, gives you access to thousands of art and craft video classes taught by design experts and artists!

Try making your own journal using an old book (yes, I give you permission to destroy a book), make your very own bullet journal or make a sweater for your pet rock. The possibilities are endless.

5. Learn a New Language

For the last 45 years, I’ve set a New Year’s resolution to learn a new language, and I’m only 29. However, the tides may have turned, and 2020 may be my year. I mean…it’s not been going great so far but it still may be my year to accomplish one thing at least.

Through the library, you have access to a great online language learning tool called Mango Languages! Mango offers a wide variety of languages to learn including Spanish, French, Japanese, and even Pirate. Yar! One of my favorite things about Mango Languages is that they have an app you can download to your smartphone or tablet.
