Commentary

The Promised Neverland is some seriously good stuff. It revolves primarily around three characters: Emma, Ray, and Norman. They are orphans living with a caretaker they call “Mom” and discover something that changes their whole world. Life with Mom is not what it seems.

I consider it in the horror genre, but in terms of suspense rather than jump scares. You’re scared because you don’t know what is going to happen next, and you need to know and need to know it right now. But the show takes its time getting there. It’s definitely a slower-paced anime, a slow burn if you will. But once it gets there. Man, IT GETS THERE.

Neverland is also not for the faint of heart. I’m giving you guys a warning that it shows some death and gore in a few of its episodes, especially the first and last episodes. It’s not heavy, but might be shocking for those who are not used to the horror genre. Outside of those mentioned moments, it is pretty tame and relies on the fear of the unknown instead of gore and jump scares.

The only downside of the show is that it’s only twelve episodes! It is getting a second season, but that will not be until January 2021 if it does not get delayed. I can’t wait!

Stream it today on Crunchyroll or find a copy of the Manga.
