Looking to teach your child a new language and not sure where to start? Are you trying to find picture books in the language that you speak at home? Look no further than Lote4Kids! This new online resource provides access to a large collection of children’s digital picture books and activities in over 100 world languages, including Spanish, Polish, Arabic and even American Sign Language.

Lote4Kids is constantly being updated with new languages and picture books, so you’ll regularly have new stories to share with your child. Plus, it’s available as an app for Apple and Android devices, making storytime on the go a breeze!

When you log in to Lote4Kids using your Fountaindale Public Library card, you’ll be greeted with an eye-catching home screen with four different tabs: Books, Avatar, Activities and Mobile App. Let’s take a closer look at each of these tabs!

Books

The Book tab is the home page. You’ll be able to scroll through the various languages that Lote4Kids offers. When you click a language, you will see multiple ways to search and filter picture books to help you narrow your search. These filters include reading levels, popularity and nonfiction. You can also just scroll through the available titles until you find one you like.

There are multiple ways to engage with a picture book on Lote4Kids. When you select “Flipbook,” you will enjoy the picture book in your preferred language with flipable pages, to read the title at your own pace. If you want a native speaker to read the book to you, select the option with the blue play button. Some books are bilingual and can be read in English and your selected language.

Whichever you choose, Lote will take you to a new page with the book, a summary and the reading level. On the right-hand side of the screen, you will see a few interesting features:

  • Reward-Driven learning: Dress up your avatar, visit the learning dashboard and take a reading comprehension quiz.
  • Read It Your Way: Change the book’s format or language.
  • Related Activities: Find other activities inspired by the book, like coloring pages or word searches. These can be downloaded and printed out.
  • Similar Books: If you enjoy the current books, you can find similar titles here.

Avatar

As you read and complete activities on Lote4Kids, you’ll see notifications that say “Gained a Feather!” Anytime you click a book, quiz or activity, you can gain feathers. These can be used to buy swag for the owl on your home screen.

You can get to the “Dress Your Avatar” section of Lote4Kids in a few different ways. If you start from the homepage, you can click the “Avatar” tab or click directly on the Avatar. There are a lot of really cool options to personalize your owl, so I encourage you to play around with the swag once you’ve gained enough feathers! Points aren’t too difficult to earn, so you’ll have plenty of swag once you get going.

Activities

Lote4Kids also has fun activities and games, including Coloring Pages, Spot the Difference, Word Search, Book Memory, Fish Typing Frenzy and Roller Coaster Patterns. All of these activities are available online, but Coloring Pages, Spot the Difference and Word Searches can also be downloaded and printed.

These activities are also a fun way to earn feathers for your avatar’s swag. I had a lot of fun with Fish Typing Frenzy! It’s a great way to practice typing skills!

Mobile App

In this section, Lote4Kids will give you a QR code to scan to install the digital app on your Apple or Android device. The app functions similarly to the web version. When I used it on my phone, I found it to be easy to navigate and read—even on a smaller screen. The app also has a streaks feature that creates a gamified experience from continued interactions with the app—this feature is an App exclusive!

As you’ve seen, Lote4Kids is an amazing resource for anyone looking for picture books in other languages. I also really love that the narrators in the audiobooks are native speakers of the languages. Lote4Kids provides such a large quantity of digital picture books that it’s hard not to find something fun to read!
